Plan for a lesson closure

A lesson closure is vital as it helps solidify student learning. It is a time for students to summarize what they have learned, consolidate key ideas and concepts, and transfer the learnt ideas to new situations or future applications. It is also valuable time for teachers to assess the effectiveness of students’ learning, correct any misunderstandings and inform subsequent instruction.

There are several ways to put a closure to the lesson. Below are a few examples:

  • state the main points yourself (“Today we talked about…”)
  • ask a student to help you summarize them
  • ask students to pair up and share with their partner about the significance of the lesson
  • ask all students to complete an exit ticket
  • allow student to do free writing (write down on a piece of paper what they think were the main points of the lesson, what they have done well and what they need to improve)
