Chương này tập trung vào các kỹ năng sống và kỹ năng tương tác - những kỹ năng rất quan trọng đối với tất cả chúng ta. Chương học được thiết kế nhằm nâng cao và duy trì sức bền cũng như sức khỏe tâm lý cho học sinh lớp 9 bằng cách giúp các em phát triển kỹ năng cảm xúc - xã hội. Nghiên cứu cho thấy những người trẻ tuổi sở hữu kỹ năng cảm xúc - xã hội tốt thường có khả năng đối phó tốt hơn với các tác nhân gây căng thẳng trong cuộc sống hàng ngày. Những em này cũng có xu hướng có mối quan hệ tốt hơn với cha mẹ, giáo viên và bạn bè đồng trang lứa, đồng thời có thành tích học tập cao hơn. Ngoài ra, kỹ năng cảm xúc - xã hội còn giúp hạn chế khả năng gặp phải các vấn đề nghiêm trọng về sức khỏe tâm lý ở người trẻ.
Với phương pháp tiếp cận chú trọng vào điểm mạnh, chương học Tự chủ yêu cầu học sinh ít tập trung vào những khía cạnh mà các em cho là mình kém cỏi hoặc không phù hợp, thay vào đó tập trung nhiều hơn vào những điều các em nghĩ là mình làm tốt (hoặc khá) và có thể tận dụng được. Ví dụ, một học sinh có thể không có được cơ thể mà em cho là lý tưởng, nhưng cơ thể đó vẫn giúp em di chuyển, nói chuyện, ăn uống và cảm nhận. Một học sinh có thể không phải là người nổi bật nhất trong lớp, nhưng em vẫn có thể sở hữu những phẩm chất đáng quý như lòng trung thành, khiếu hài hước hay biết giúp bố mẹ chăm em sau khi tan lớp. Nói tóm lại, nếu học sinh tránh tập trung vào ‘lỗi lầm’ và ‘khiếm khuyết’ của bản thân, thay vào đó cố gắng phát triển những những phẩm chất vốn có và những điều các em làm tốt thì các em sẽ thấy hài lòng hơn trong cuộc sống.

It's extremely important to teach students about reporting sexual abuse. Participation in a sexual abuse prevention program increases disclosure rates among students, so teaching children assertiveness and reporting skills is critical. It's also important for students to know they can seek help if they are being abused and to continue telling people until they get help. Some students may be afraid to talk about their abuse because they have been told by their abuser(s) to keep it secret. This kind of secrecy allows the abuse to continue. Therefore it's critical to teach students not to keep secrets about abuse.
